• Basic Web Page design and publishing: My personal preference is for function over form to obtain the best response when considering "Speed VS Sparkle". My personal website isn't very exciting at all, but you can check out other sites I have designed:

 
• Eye Associates of NM - Contact Lens Central - active - Corporate "spin-off" site for a large practice of eye doctors in Albuquerque. The initial project is an employee-only web-based interface and database which manages information for Contact Lens orders; completed May '04. The goal being to centralize vendor contact and manage orders coming from multiple doctors at multiple locations and streamline the process. The functionality is not "visible" to the public, but does some pretty cool stuff in dynamic display of order status and reconciliation with vendor invoices. The next phase of the project will involve enabling patient re-order online.


• BikeNM.org - Ongoing - A site I started in the summer of 2003, and continue to work on in a volunteer basis, dontating my development time. It is for a non-profit group of bicycle advocates in the state of New Mexico. Since I have a deep personal interest in biking I contribute by designing a website to manage membership, information, and news concerning biking in NM. We have statewide information and issues as well as city-specific issues and contacts. The goal is to create a focal point for cyclists to apply their political power to drive desired change to make cycling more popular and safe throughout New Mexico. The technical aspects of the site involve a customer user registration and management system integrated to other value-added tools like: a chatboard, email-to-handle (to insulate from spammers), and a soon to come threaded discussion forum. I decided to write these tools from scratch in perl because I couldn't find any existing toolsets that were integrated to a user registration system.


• Neutron-Shielding.com - Inactive - This site is a re-design based on existing "copy"... The original navigation used a FRAMES design in conjunction with some FrontPage junk that was making the site pretty much invisible to search engines. Redesign consists mostly of a simple menubar and internal cleanup. Includes a web-based administrative interface to allow marketing and sales to modify specific areas on the homepage for announcements and special sales of products.

  Spring of 2004, the corporate "Parent" took over this division, and has moved the information to their main site.



• AeromedArizona.com - ongoing - A small firm specializing in air transport of medical patients via jet and turbo-prop planes. Based in Tuscon AZ. They needed a little re-vamp of their site and to get moved to a new host. They had an initial design that was not bad, but a little short on text, especially on the homepage. So, I started on the project in Jan, 2002 and cleaned up the basic navigation. We continue to add a little functionality now and then. recent additions are not visible to the public, but include: an interactive "Call Scheduler" calendar application for their medical crew to self-schedule call days, A "Pilot Schedule" that is web-edittable by the CEO and sends out automatice email notification to pilots as the schedule is updated. Recently we also developed a web-based trip log application to gather and report information from the flight crew to the central office billing department.


• CanyonCrestPublishing.com - Ongoing - This site was a complete re-design... It is a simple site designed to sell a single product, (a book). I added a full-scale implementation of e-commerce using Verisign transaction handling with a internet enabled merchant account for handling credit cards. The client only has one product, but expects too much volume for PayPal, or PayPro solutions. No shopping cart was really needed, so the order form is integrated directly with Verisign's PayFlowLink product. Other interesting features include a web-based administrative interface that employees use to view and export customer order information including addresses to plug into a MailMerge document to generate shippers and receipts.


• KLWerner & Associates - ongoing - Albuquerque Broker/Realtor. A relatively "simple" howdy-do site, development started 8/1/01 and is still a work in progress as information is available. Initial design is complete, with sections added as budget allows. Added a sample listing 6/2002 complete with pictures. Traffic has not warrented a more automated toolset yet...

 
• Society of Professional Engineers, New Mexico - ongoing - I was hired to "clean up" an existing site and provide some administrative tools for the executive director to upload reports and perform other site administration. The original implementation was a marginal FRAMES-based interface generated with NetFusion. Pages contained a great deal of useless formatting, and the FRAMES were preventing search engine indexing as well as performace problems. This is still a work in progress occasionally as budget and need arises...

 
• NormsGallery.com - ongoing - A virtual gallery for the online sale of Fine Art photos by a single artist. This site has been a lot of fun because it involved extensive use of server-side administrative tools and image manipulation to allow the artist to upload and maintain the gallery without needing to know html or ftp. The presentation of the Gallery is fairly high-tech with many features usually only found on really big sites like: on-site searches, client opt-in email notifications, a shopping cart which generates a mail-in order form, automatic e-mail verification of order, etc. The basics are all in now, with a few more administrative tools to be added over time. Most areas can now be editted online by the Photographer, and only occasional maintainance is required.


• Aerowest Helicopters - ongoing - A simple new design went live in December 2001. One interesting feature of this site isn't really visible to the public; there is an employee-only area with all their weekly and monthly report submission forms so that employees on extended remote operations can send in their timesheets and other reports.
 
• The Transition Quikie - website to promote one of my inventions. It is very basic, and doesnt have any real e-commerce built in since I am not set up to be a high-volume retailer with a merchant ID and all that. There are ways to do 3rd party cc verification and transactions now, but I dont get enough volume to justify the time to set it up.


• SeniorDiscounts.com - inactive - A specialized seaarch engine/index of businesses offering discounts to seniors. The main site is designed and maintained by OsoGrande.com , but I got involved to write some administrative tools to generate special reports for the marketing team from the raw server logs. Basically, the typical server access logs didn't really tell them what they needed, so I wrote a special parser and a password-protected web-based interface to allow them to run, archive, and view weekly and monthly reports generated from the server logs. Unfortunately, none of what I did is visible to the public. ;)  This project had limited scope, and has been completed for now; until they need more tools.


• Albuquerque Mothers of Twins Club - inactive - A very small site for a non-profit group. The challange was to provide member edittable tools for calanders, meetings, and chat at a minimum cost. Also to provide a medium to attract new club members and possible corporate sponsors to pay for the website. I used a combination of a homepage and groups.yahoo.com to pull together all the functionality and got the all set up with their own domain name, email, etc. (in less than 3 hours). No development or maintainance has been done after initial design due to budget restraints. They may fire it back up in preparation for their 2003 convention. On 12/5/02 they got a club member to take over web design/mainenance and I haven't really kept track of changes since then.


• Great Plains Airlines - inactive - This is a re-design project for a start-up airline. The original site had some really basic errors that were making it very un-searchfriendly like extensive use of .asp pages, and no "real"text on the homepage for the search-bots to index with; and the presentation of the routes,fares,and schedules was pretty hard to follow. There were also some basic navigation no-no's like a top menu bar wider than 800 pixels,and all the navigation button built with images even though they could have been text. The redesign started 8/1/01, and took about a month. Navigation has been cleaned up, and new web-based administration features have been added in a password protected area.
  
  Unfortunately, in the spring  of 2002 the airline suffered some cash flow issues and management changes. They stopped paying bills in a timely manner and put all website development on hold.... Remains to be seen whether development will resume, be transferred to another developer, or go under.
  ...they filed chapter 11 spring of '04.

 
• Mariposa Gallery - inactive - A Fine Arts Gallery. This site was originally constructed to give critical location and contact information. Implementation of online product listings and e-commerce was delayed for a long time while the store obtained technology and expertise required to interface with the web. Recently they re-designed with another firm to present some key items for sale online.... but my critique of the current design is not very favorable. They have made some common errors in opting for a FRAMES-based interface and not giving surfers a way to opt-in for notification of shows and sales. No goodies like on-site searching, etc, etc. As a result, their traffic is quite low.

 
• Sportz Outdoor - inactive - Website for a retail sporting goods store. I designed a fairly full-featured site with "departments" for each area of the store for the presentation of sale items and key merchandise. However, the decision was that since they prefer to sell service over low price, the maintainence of a website was not cost effective in driving sales. The site has been scaled back to a simple two-page "howdy" site with no real interesting information other than contact and location info.

 
• The Dauphine Hotel B&B - inactive - a bed and breakfast in the Ozark region MO. This is a small, clean site that has been taken over by the business owners. The design is largely the same as the original except for some cosmetic changes in the menu navigation "look". 

 
• Amazing Golf Bargains - inactive - virtual storefront for discount golf equipment. Since my original design, they have changed the look and feel pretty much completely... I got them started, and did a little training of some in-house staff. They have since developed it into a full-fledged e-commerce site and use a product driven e-commerce site to dynamically construct most of the site. I am no longer involved in the maintainence of the site. If I were, I suggest a few things to help their search engine "findability." like: more plain text on the homepage, and links to product index pages with text descriptions for search engines to "find". Currently, with a graphics homepage, and dynamic product listings, most search engines have very little to grab from their site. They are pretty much backed into the design limitations by the method they are using to outsource the product catalog and e-business.

 
• Eye Associates of NM - inactive - Corporate site for a large practice of eye doctors in Albuquerque. I wrote a considerable amount of  "copy" for info on the latest refractive surgeries, etc. which is still in use on the site. Unfortunately, a zealous Marketing Director decided to give this project to another development firm that uses far too much "sparkle" and has compromised the site's effectiveness. They have made extensive use of Flash and Frames for the interface, which can (and has) taken a toll on their site visits because search engines can no longer index the site properly, and many people dont like the new slow-loading pages that are over-loaded with javascript, movies, and useless graphics. Do I sound bitter? No, just disappointed.

 
• Molokai Rental Villa - inactive - information website for a rental property in Hawaii. Lots of nice pictures. Still a client,but no changes have been requested recently.

• Software development management and consulting: I have experience in the full lifecycle of REALISTIC development practices for small to medium sized development teams of 1-30 developers. I have been a developer and managed teams for design, development, testing, sales support, and customer support. I am not overly academic, and believe that the development environment should be a dynamic set of practices changing to reflect current product maturity, staff size, product liability, and market pressures. I can help you work smarter with less wasted effort and more productive results while having fun!

• Heat Recovery Unit - Simple mechanical unit that utilizes energy that is normally wasted to pre-heat water before it gets to your hot water heater, resulting in up to 50% energy savings in preliminary testing. The product is in the final stages of development with a working prototype. The DOE is currently evaluating the product, and I plan to license the technology to an interested OEM pending the outcome. • The Transition " Quickie" - A product enabling you to use a snowshoe binding that is easy to use with gloves on, won't release unexpectedly or let your heel wiggle around. It was developed mostly for fast transitions in racing, but is also great for the recreational snowshoer. I have a Patent pending on this product, and it is available for direct mail-order retail or wholesale, as well as available for license for private or OEM manufacture. I am selling private licenses and step-by-step instructions to the "do-it-yourselfer" for a royalty of $5 per pair. Contact me for more information.
